Thank God for beauty pageants in general and for Binibining Pilipinas 2008 in particular. I’ve found new grist for my mill. You probably know of whom and of what I speak. Binibining Pilipinas was held on March 8, 2008 - and, surprisingly, Janina San Miguel won the title “Binibining Pilipinas World 2008″ despite (or was it because) of her unbelievably horrendous performance during the pageant’s Question and Answer portion.
For those of you who are too lazy or too impatient to watch the video, here’s my detailed transcript and commentary on this enormously notable event. The Host was Paolo Bediones.
Host: Janina, how are you?
Janina: I’m fine.
Host: All right…
Janina: Yes
[directs a sickeningly sweet and plastic beauty queen smile to the audience]
Host: (cont)… so you won two of the major awards - Best in Long Gown and Best in Swimsuit…
Janina: [smiles her beauty queen smile; tries to look humbly complacent but succeeds only in looking rather constipated] Yes [She seems exceedingly fond of the word Yes, huh?]
Host: (cont)…Do you feel any pressure right now?
Janina: No, I don’t fill any pressure right now.
[Nah, that's not a misspelling; that's exactly what she said though she probably meant "feel." And if you want to know how she recited this statement, read it the way you have been taught to read poems when you were in elementary school: put the stress on every other word. That is to say, emphasize the following: No, fill, pressure - you get the gist? Don't forget to over-enunciate, too. That's a definite requirement. Oh, and smile the sickly smile afterwards]
Host: Confident! All right! Please choose the name of a judge!
[At this point, Janina again bestows the world with her beauty queen smile then inclines her head regally (?) towards the audience. When asked to pick a name from the lot of judges, she pouts prettily then pastes on - there really is no other term for it - her smile once again]
Host: We have Ms. Vivian Tan.
Ms. Tan: Good evening.
Janina: Good evening!
Ms. Tan: The question is: What role did your family play with you as candidate to Binibining Pilipinas?
Janina: Well, my family’s role for me is so important. Because there was the… they’re… they was the one [you should see the look on ms. Tan's face: it has a petrified quality to it and there's a telling flicker of the left eyelid - it seems she can't believe what she's hearing and seeing] who…se [crowd roars] very Ha Ha, Oh, I’m so sorry. My pamily, my family, Oh my God [Ms. Tan finally yet good naturedly chuckles; crowd roars] I’m, [Paolo Bediones: That's Ok] Ok, I’m so sorry, I, I told you that I’m so confident, eto, ahm, wait, aha ha ha ha ha ha [her laughter is a bit hysterical; the crowd roars once again]. Ahm, Sorry guys [the camera pans to the other contestants on stage; the ladies were obviously but unsuccessfully trying to suppress their mirth; they were giggling a shade too bitchily, perhaps, but who can blame them for being glad, huh? After all, they're in a contest with Ms. San Miguel] because this was really my first pageant ever. Because I’m only 17 years old [camera pans to the judges' table; it shows Ms Tan still widely smiling but the petrified quality to her smile is back. obviously she's still incredulous ; the judge seated beside Ms. Tan is openly laughing at this point] and Uh ha ha I, I did not expect that I came from, I came from one of the TAFF 10 [she meant that she can't believe she made it to the TOP 10], hmm [the hmm sound she made as if to convince herself and the crowd; really; listen to it and you'll agree], so, but I said DOT [DOT = that; Ms. Tan and the judge seated beside her are still smiling but their smiles indicate that they don't find it funny anymore; the guy judge's eyes are downcast while Ms. Tan's is fixed on Ms. San Miguel; it seems they have now started to accept the fact that they have in front of them a contestant who "came apart at the seams" in an incredibly grand way during the Q&A portion] my family is the most important persons in my life, thank you.
Make your presence felt. Please sign my guestbook or leave a comment. Thanks!

confident k p tlga s lgay n yan ah… …
He he, mismo!
I have to check on that.
However, two things are clear: Dapat, nag-Pilipino na lang si Janina. At dapat sinagot nya talaga yung tanong. Even without the English language problems, her answer still doesn’t make sense.
“What is the role that your family played…” ang tanong at ang sagot nya’y “…my family is the most important persons [sic] in my life.”
Gaahhh!!!
huy wag nyu aku pag osapan ahahahahahahaha dat was may pirst taym ok? ahahaha oh am sory ahahaha!
I find her cute and charming.!
i really don’t get it..bakit nanalo sya?!!pinagpipistahan namin dito sa office ang katang*han nya.. ^_^
Jack,
I agree; she is cute and charming. However, being cute and charming does not automatically make one qualified to bear the title “Binibining Pilipinas Ms. World.” This, I believe, is what most people find “unjust” or at the very least “baffling.”
mary jane,
LOLZ …
why do we laugh at people who make mistakes?
and why do we expect all Filipinos to speak in perfect English?. For us Filipinos, English is a second language
so we’re not expected to speak it like the natives. Also,
Janina may not express herself very well in English but this
doesn’t mean she’s stupid. I wonder if these contests
set English proficiency as one of the criteria?. If not, then there is no reason for us to question the decision of the
judges. To my mind Janina San Miguel has the looks and poise
of a winner and even after her blunder she never lost her
sense of confidence. She continued to smile and walk like
the winner that she is. Bravo Janina!!!

evelyn,
We laugh at people who make mistakes because it’s amusing. Have you never really laughed when someone made a mistake? This is just an honest reaction and everyone - not just Janina - has had an experience at being “laughed at” for mistakes.
Secondly, we don’t expect all Filipinos to speak perfect English. But we do expect Bb. Pilipinas contestants to speak good English. Notice the difference? Bb. Pilipinas contestants have to abide by different expectations by the mere nature of the competition. Just like we expect the President not to accept dole outs yet we are more forgiving when our relatives in public administrative posts accept kickbacks (hmm?).
Thirdly, yes, she’s not stupid for not being a good English speaker. However, notice that she was not able to answer the question she was asked. Again, the question was “What role did your family play…” and the answer was, “… my family is the most important persons in my life.” Enough said.
Fourthly, No, English proficiency is NOT one of the criteria for judging. However, giving sensible answers is - whether the answer is in English or in Filipino.
Fifthly, yes, we can’t help but question the judges’ decision because the Question and Answer portion has always been assumed to matter greatly in the selection process. Janina obviously failed it (there can be no doubt about this, surely?) but she still won a major title. Shouldn’t we doubt the decision in that case?
Finally, I agree with your last point. Janina stood her ground and continued to smile. As for poise, however, she did not retain it. She was laughing a bit hysterically. She rambled on and on about inconsequential matters. That’s not grace under pressure.
Bravo Janina? Yes! She has won and there’s nothing anyone can do about it but pray that she gets a good coach or that Janina will give more attention to her instruction before she actually goes on to the Ms. World beauty pageant.
Mito,
Ewan ko ba.
hello janina,
very defensive cia sa sarili niya kasi alam nya na nagkamali cia. grabe para ciang gaga, ginawa ciang usap usapan ng mga tao ngayon.. sana janina you must study good english for the sake of our country. wag mo ipahiya ang philippines.. pangit yon alam mo ba?
Ms. jinky, I agree with you. .bravo
Baka nga sumagot na sila at di ko lang nabalitaan; I’ll try to find out.
I think you missed to mention that off-mic, Paolo Bediones even told her “… pwede mag-tagalog…” when it became pretty obvious that she cant compose an answer…
OAN, she can just relinquish her crown and join showbiz ala Alyssa Alano.
anne,
I believe you are referring to her response (aired in ChikaMinute) when she was asked for comment on the issue? If that’s it, I have to agree about the “defensive” bit.
The best thing Janina can do is to prepare intensively for the Ms. World Pageant, wow the said pageant’s judges with her beauty and astound them (and her critics) with her wit. Winning the Ms. World crown would be the best response to the criticisms which are being leveled against her. She’ll prove that the Bb. Pilipinas fiasco was a one-time thing, and we - the Filipinos - will be just so thrilled to add another beauty title to our list of beauty titles that we would welcome her home with open arms and the widest and warmest of smiles.
Don’t you agree?
febe,
You are right. I did omit the part about Paolo Bediones urging Ms. Janina San Miguel to switch mediums - from English to Filipino. That was a deliberate omission on my part (sorry); Paolo Bediones’ voice was so faint I could not hear it clearly, so rather than make a mistaken account I just did not include it. he he
Anyway, I think Janina would indeed thank the embarassing incident one day (if she isn’t already feeling a wee bit grateful for it now) because it has catapulted her to a level of popularity that most Binibining Pilipinas winners do not attain unless they finally join showbusiness. We know what they say, bad popularity is still popularity…
Comment:My heart goes out for Janina. We will never know unless we are into that situation,But as a constructive critisism, since we all learn from our mistakes, regardless,i see no point of adding salt to the injury so why don’t we convey to her that from that incident is an awakenig that she needs to strive how to communicate well or at least “betterer”.There is something else necessary to be really beautiful in the true sense of the word.god bless her.
cecile,
Yup, you’re right. This is a harsh lesson for Janina, but a lesson from which she can learn nonetheless.
A lot of beauty queens all over the world cannot speak english. She could have asked for a filipino interpretation if she did not understand the question. Like you said, she could have spoken in filipino. I hope she would choose to speak in our very own filipino language and ask for an interpreter, for the philippines’ sake!(if she ever gets to the finals)
When she joined the competition, she knew what she would go through even if she is only 17 years old.
Al,
You are right. Janina knew what was involved in a beauty pageant, and her age does not and should not matter. I also hope, as you do, that if she makes it to the finals she’ll use the Filipino language and ask for an interpreter.
Jinky?
You are a teacher right?
I admire your proficiency in English. Your reasoning as well.
I’ll be checking your blog here from now on. ^_^
mary_jane,
Hi! Yes, I currently teach. Thank you very much for that very kind compliment - about my English proficiency and my reasoning, he he.
Thank you, too, for giving my blog the time of day. I hope you’ll start blogging, or you can give me your blog address if you already have a blog so I can check it out and I can add it to my blogroll.
I hope to see you online and hear from you from time to time!

Hi Jinky!
Actually, I’m a call center agent and making calls all night is such a grueling, boring job. I’ve been employed for a year now in a BPO company located in Iloilo and we do outbound calls so whenever I get bored I entertain myself by browsing wordpress, wikipedia and other ‘intelligent, meaningful’ sites. I really don’t have a blog address of my own because I doubt it if I can maintain it anyway..he, he.
Anyway, we don’t have access with yahoomail or gmail here in our office but you could email me in my company email address. ^_^
I admire teachers because my mom is one and sometimes I feel like I want to be one too. I haven’t graduated yet so I envy professionals. he,he.
By the way, Janina answers English questions in Filipino now, good for her. She has learned her lesson. ^_^
well well well thats life.,
ram,
indeed it is.
everyone !!!!
No matter what you’ve said , she is still the reigning Bb. Pilipinas -World 2008 and will represent our country in november ! so stop making negative comments , wish her all the best of luck and leave her alone !!!!
Ms. frienship,
You are right that she is the reigning Bb. Pilipinas World. She will indeed represent our country in November. I wish her the best of luck, too.
I respect your opinion; you have a right to stand by your own convictions. However, others have the same right, too, you know? Please respect others enough not to impose your opinions on them.
-Jinky
Is this who we expect to represent us?
Oh Lord!
Name withheld to protect the gorgeous,
By all means, let’s protect the gorgeous.
And yes, she really will represent us in the Ms. World pageant. Let’s do the rain dance! Oh, right! That will give us rain, not a miracle (Bad jinky

[...] Her blog is gaining quite an amount of readers. Her various commentaries range from topics on Janina San Miguel’s slur at the Bb. Pilipinas beauty pageant to the Papaya dance craze and to a lot more amusing yet highly [...]
well shes young and it is her first time. being young and stupid though doesnt make it an excuse to “flop” like that. It was extremely unfair to the other contestants who thoughtfully answered their questions. Who knows why the judges did that, for publicity maybe? If she doesnt clean up her act by the next pageant she will definitely embarrass the philippines.
Maria,
Hi there! Thank you for leaving a comment.
You’re right. Being young is never going to be a good excuse for the slip she made. You also raised a very valid point: the judges’ decision was and still is unfair to the other contestants who performed better. Furthermore, the judges’ decision was also an insult to the Filipino people.
See you again, soon!

Janina San Miguel at 17 years of age has achieved more than most of us has only dreamed about. She despite of her lack in grammar attempted to go up that stage and even when everybody is laughing at her she managed to continue. Do you know that the biggest fear on earth is not death but to talk in front of thousands of people or public speaking. Most of us will not be seen nor speak to 1 percent of the amount of people Janina San Miguel has faced.
She managed to hide her low knowledge of English language until the question and answer portion. If you think she is stupid, what about the people she got away from. There are so many screenings and she managed to pass those.
despite being laughed at by thousands or millions of people world wide, she did not run of stage and try to maintain her posture at that trying moment. Most of us will die and will never be put to that stressful situation.
Despite all the things we have seen that should not make her a winner, the judges saw different. The judges saw how much BALLS she has and frankly in my entire life, I have not seen someone with her BALLS.
Janina San Miguel has won the pageant simply because she has the biggest balls among the candidates nothing more nothing less.
don’t judge her!!!!
Hi Sandy,
I appreciate your leaving a comment and presenting a different point of view - a point of view, I might add, which I can certainly see no fault with. You go, girl!
- Jinky
ah tnx…
hahaha pilipina d marunong sa wikang tagalog
I cannot believe how many of you spent all this time criticizing that young woman, Janina. What is it in you that is honored when you put down other people? Does it make you women look better than her? Or make you feel smarter than her? Your backs are probably so sore from all the patting you’re doing to yourselves. Just who are you perfect creatures of God to even make fun of her? Do any of you realize that her inability to express herself in English is due to no fault of hers. Did it ever occur to any of you that she may not have had a good education because her parents couldn’t grant her the privilege?
What do you intend to achieve with your blog about her? To illicit equally negative and purposeless entries?
Christian,
Hi there! Thanks for visiting my blog. And no, my back is not hurting, thanks for asking. No, I also did not spend hours writing the post. It took just a few minutes at most.
Let me reiterate that the issue revolved (note the past tense) around the fact that she did not answer the question she was asked - and she still won. Her performance was amusing, of course. Come on, you did not really expect people to keep mum about the event. That would be extremely hypocritical.
I admire your intentions - but look who’s pointing fingers. This blog is not about Janina at all; it’s about me. Therefore, I wrote about what I saw and what I felt - no self-glorification intended. In fact, if I wanted to make myself look good, I’d have written “Stop criticizing Janina; she’s just a poor helpless girl!” That would have won me “brownie points” and made me come across as a good person.
But I’m no hypocrite and I will not say I did not find the pageant funny when I did.
The post about Janina is just a very small part of this blog. And i have already forgotten about. I just post comments when they come but I don’t spend my time re-reading this post and “patting myself on the back” about how witty or funny the post is.
Let it go. It’s long past the time the issue died anyway, okay?
- Jinky
you people are idiots.. inggit lng kau kay janina..
go christian go….!!!!!! nice thought….
hoi adicros ang sama muh…..
Janina,
God Bless your heart. Let us face your future. You won, you’re going to represent the beauty and talent of the Filipinos in the Miss World Contest. You still have time to find a tutor. Constant correct practice will make you perfect. Listen carefully to the question then assimilate, don’t just open your mouth without making any sense. English is not a problem (take an interpreter with you), it is on how you convince the judges with your concise, direct to the pont answer to what is being asked. The most important in answering question is the real sense and the depth of your response. You are pretty and capable of winning the Miss World, poise wise, yet, talent is also one of the criteria to bring home the Miss World 2008 title. Good luck !!!!
I can’t understand why some people just have to go all mushy mushy and teary eyed about this issue.
Are we having a “Who wants to be the next Mother Theresa” competition here? or “Who has the biggest heart competition”?
Janina flopped big time and she still won. That’s the issue. The contest was about beauty and brains not about who’s the most pitiful and thus has to be understood and supported “because her parents didnt have the money to educate her”..
If that was the case, then she should’ve joined “Maalaala mo kaya” or “Wowowee” or some other contest that lets the one with the most pitiful story win. Moreover, that’s what these pro-Janina people should’ve watched.
If the amount of pity is the barometer in which contests should be judged, then Diaz should’ve won and not Manny right? After all, he drives a shitty car while Manny has already amassed millions. Diaz endured 9 rounds of torture. He battled on despite his swollen eye and bleeding cuts. I wonder then why Manny won??
HMMM… PERHAPS BECAUSE HE WAS SIMPLY BETTER???
On a more personal level, would you take it sitting down if another person in your office got promoted over you just because he or she got more dependents and has a more pitiful story?
How would you feel if you’re on the loser’s side and the judges judged unfairly?
Now think about how the parents and supporters of the other contestants felt when Janina won despite her enormous blunder. Perhaps you should ask them about their stories, too, just in case some other contestant had more “Pity” points.
Fair’s fair and what’s right is right whichever way you look at it and whatever perspective you use - winner’s or loser’s. The contest was about beauty and brains, and some people are just expressing their anger and disgust over the result. Other contestants were a lot more beautiful than Janina. Now read the above transcript again and tell me - did she win because of her edge in brains?
To tell you the truth, I find all this “Janina has more balls”, “Janina didn’t have the money for education”, “Janina has more potential”, ” Janina conquered her fears” crap disgusting.
Each and every one of the other contestants conquered their fears when they faced the audience, Janina was no better than them. (the other contestants however had the brains to avoid such an embarrassing blunder)
Each and everyone of the other contestants have a sob story of her own. Ask them. (They didn’t however use THEIR stories to justify a crown)
Each and everyone of the other contestants have potential. They got in the finals and had to endure the same screening Janina went through after all.
The competition was about beauty and brains…
not balls, not sob stories about poverty, not potential, and not anything else.
People don’t hate Janina; they hate the results of the competition and they blame the judges.
ITS THAT SIMPLE.
And no amount of pity, self righteousness, defending the damsel in distress, and spouting off other Janina “qualities” that have nothing to do whatsoever with a beauty competition will make Janina the rightful winner in that contest.
THE BEST SHOULD ALWAYS WIN, isn’t that how competitions are always judged and why there are competitions in the first place???
back to my point:
DID JANINA HAVE THE BEST WHEN IT COMES TO BEAUTY AND BRAINS IN THE COMPETITION???
…what was that???
THOUGHT SO, he he
ano ba yan? walang kamatayang topic ni janina! maganda nga si janina, no doubt about that, pero naman, naman, naman! alam niyang di sya magaling sa English, pilit pa ng pilit mag English! eh di napahiya sya tuloy. kung may balls si janina to join the contest, it was because she was banking on her beauty. eh tama naman ang iba, di ba? na ang contest na sinalihan ni janina, di lang pang beauty kundi pang brains din! eh kung may brains si janina, eh di sana di na siya nag English dahil alam niyang di sya magaling dun.
if she really is answering in tagalog na, good for her. i hope she answers her Q&A portion in our language na lang to better answer the question. and IF malayo pa rin ang answer niya sa question, well, you know where her brain is.
and di naman siguro “mamamatay” karamihan sa atin kung nasa ganung situation ni janina, ano ka ba. nakakahiya nga lang talaga pero life goes on. kung paguusapan lang naman natin ang people with balls, i pity you kung si janina na ang taong yun para sayo. eh pano ang presidente natin? di ba mas may balls sya? sa lahat satin? at bago sa balls, di kaya mas importante ang utak?
Miss World Beauty Pageant is entirely different from Boxing.
Don’t compare. It is just like huwag mong ikumpara ang Philippines sa United States of America. That’s all, folks hehehe

“Miss World Beauty Pageant is entirely different from Boxing.”

para kang pork and beans..
lahat beans, iisang piraso lang ang pork.
Duuhhhh!!!
Of course boxing is different from the Miss World Beauty Pageant!
However, I was talking about the principle behind having competitions in general.
THAT THE BEST AND NOT THE CONTESTANT WHO HAS THE BETTER SOB STORY SHOULD WIN

Ano bang gusto mong sabihin dito?
1. na hindi pwedeng i kompare ang US at pinas?
What about GDP, Inflation rate, population growth, policitcal structure, crime rate, etc??
kung tawas, rexona o kalamansi yung deodorant mo?
Yung pagpili mo ba ng GF/BF o asawa mo wala ka bang ibang inisip kundi opposite sex sya?
PARTE NA NG BUHAY ANG MAGCOMPARE..
KUNG DI KA MARUNONG MAGCOMPARE, MATAGAL NANG NAG ATROPHY ANG UTAK MO.
ngayon tanungin mo sa sarili mo…
MAY SENSE KAYA YUNG SINULAT MO? he he
Yogi, dahan dahan maheart ka dahil lang sa paborito mo.heheheh…peace be with you, amen
Anong nabibili ng P1.00 against $1.00? Nagsisiksikan ang mga tao sa US embassy para makalabas ng PI, sa US siksikan papasok kahit sa mga borders….. Yadi-yadi yah….ngeh..
Beyond Compare!!!!!!!!!
? beyond compare!
The intent of the pagent is suppose to identify and pick the best representative our country can offer to be pitted against the best (and prettiest) in the world. I am very aware the judges have certain criterias to meet to be even considered to judge these pagents, the same should be true with contestants. Although the unfortunate event happened within the confines of the Philippines, can any of you possibly imagine if the same thing was to happen at the “Big Dance”??? That is a scary thought. Nonetheless, I tip my hat off to Janina, she did her best given the circumstances. What I am frustrated about is the pagent in itself and the judges who made it happen. If that is not an accurate reflection of how “WE” run our pagents, I wouldn’t know what is.
The Philippines have been saturated with so much crookedness and illegalities for so long that each and every Filipino have learned to accept that this is a “FACT OF LIFE”. When you have a system that allows someone to fill the highest office of the country who is corrupt, crooked, or could not even speak English, and be acceptable, what can you possibly expect from a Bb. Pilipinas??? One more thing, why do we hold these “pagents” in English??? Are we trying to give people the wrong impression that we can speak English when we can not??? Other countries and contestants take their interpreters with them, and I know that they hold their pagents utilizing their own native languages. Maybe we need to start doing the same so as to avoid embarrasing situations like these…
For humor purposes, I would really love to see Janina with balls!!! Ha ha ha…
Whoever the contest “picked” as the winner, is the most accurate reflection of the entire pagent in itself AND MOST OF ALL, THE JUDGES. THE MOST UNFORTUNATE OF ALL, JANINA IS GOING TO BE THE MIRROR REFLECTION OF FILIPINOS AS A PEOPLE. Now, that is sad considering things could have been done better…
Kayo na lang sumali sa contest. Sa sobrang talino nio, malamang papasok kayo, papasok kayo sa pintuan nio, pauwi.
Kania kaniang trip lang yan mga tsong.
Hello Jinkie, bakit ba ganyan??? ‘Nong nangyari sa ‘yo at biglang silent and iyong blog??? I love the blog entries, lalo na the ones from you. Very informative and smart… Keep on coming now…
Abs,
May nakakamiss rin pala sa pag-iingay ko, he he. Glad to know that.
Babawi ako, the moment makahinga ako ng maluwag-luwag.
Salamat!!! Keep hanging around, I’ll have something new for you soon
- Jinky
Anonymous, I don’t think the intent of the comments made prior to yours was to suggest that anyone was more intelligent than Janina, but rather, to make it known that the system that the Philippines have in place (the pageant and the judges) really needs to be calibratred so as to avoid these unfortuante things from happening. And why do you sound pissed? This is a forum by which folks should be able to express their opinions and not personally attack those who express them, got it???
Kaya Anonymous (and why are you hiding???) take a chill pill, sit back, and really try to comprehend what is being said. Maybe, you will learn a little some-some…
Hoy # 50 and # 65, keep your comments to yourself!!! Ang iyong responses reflects exactly who you are… Diyahe ka ba…
Anonymous, kapatid ka ni Janina ano??? No wonder…
Sorry I chose not to post the most recent comments on this post. Its time this issue is laid to rest anyway. I know you understand.
